Latest news:

15th March 2006.

Kirklees Planning have received notification that the application for 2 wind turbines at Pool Hill Denby Dale has been withdrawn.

Although RAW welcomes the withdrawal of the proposal it has heard that it is not unusual for applications which have attracted large numbers of objections to be withdrawn and then re-submitted in the hope of a reduction in objections.

In this case it seems that following consultation on the application, the council had asked the applicant to provide further information for consideration. In particular, the applicant had been asked to put forward the circumstances that they consider justifies development in the green belt; to consider the impact of the development on the setting of listed buildings in the area; to consider the impact of the development upon the local highway network; to consider in more detail the impact of the development in relation to noise and to provide information about other technical matters, in particular flicker, shadowing, radio and television reception and electro magnetic disturbance.

The applicant has decided to withdraw the current application in order to properly consider the concerns raised before resubmitting the application with additional information to support it.

RAW maintains that the proposed site and its surrounding area is and will remain, inappropriate for turbines of any sort. It is unreasonably close to the population and also dangerously unstable due to mining.

RAW will continue to monitor the situation and will vigorously oppose any subsequent inappropriate turbine applications. We would like to thank the large number of people who supported us and objected to the Pool Hill scheme and would ask that they do so again should a similar proposal occur in the future.

The planning Application which was thought to be going before the Heavy Woollen Planning Committee early in the new year seems unlikely to be dealt with for another couple of months. Kirklees Planning is still involved with consulting outside agencies regarding the application. Objections can still be forwarded to Kirklees planning up until the date that the Planning Committee deals with the application.

The Planning Application has been validated and issued with the number: 2005/62/93609/E3

RAW is organising a Public Meeting and Exhibition about the proposed Wind Power Station at Scissett Working Men's Club on Monday 17th October at 7pm. We have invited a guest speaker Mr. David Brierley to give a first hand account of having to live with turbines.

A Planning Application has been submitted to Kirklees for two Wind Turbines to be erected on land at Pool Hill, Denby Dale. The turbines would be 125 metres from ground to blade tip and each would have a rotor diameter of 90 metres.

The Planning Application will not be published until validation is complete. At which time Kirklees will announce full details, where it can be viewed, where comments and objections should be sent and any time limits imposed.

As soon as full details of the application is published, they will appear on this website along with help and advice for those wishing to object to the proposal.

The 60M Wind Monitoring Mast was finally dismantled on Monday the 22nd August. 5 months after its temporary 12 month planning permission had expired.

Local farmer Mr. Hector Buckley and others involved with the proposed Wind Power Station at Pool Hill, held an exhibition at the Pie Hall, Denby Dale on Thursday 28th April. They confirmed that the plan is to install two 3MW turbines with a height of 125m and 90m diameter blades which turn at a speed of approx. 170mph. Formal planning might be submitted as early as the first week in June.

The exhibition did not inform about any plan of events for installing the turbines. There was no information on the effect on local roads of the heavy traffic required during the construction phase. Photographs displayed showed no evidence of the houses in the vicinity of the site, indeed it looked as though the site was in the middle of a wilderness. There were no details of any noise assessment, particularly at nearby residences. There was no information about the low frequency noise that would be generated and no details of the effects on the local environment. Mr. Jens Peterson, managing director of the Danish company Alpha Wind Energy who are involved in the construction project, did confirm to RAW members that homes nearby would suffer from shadow flicker.

Please be prepared to send letters of objection to Kirklees Planning, possibly as early as the first week in June.

Members of the Heavy Woollen Planning Committee are to visit the Pool Hill Wind Power Station site next Week. The Committee want to see the existing 60M wind monitoring mast before it is dismantled so that they can gauge the height of the proposed turbines which are understood to be over twice the height of the monitoring mast.

Local farmer and businessman Mr. Hector Buckley, the promoter of the Wind Power Station at Pool Hill, Denby Dale, is proposing to hold a public meeting about the scheme at the end of April.

An interesting article in The Sunday Times on 23rd January talks about 'Carbon Capture' as a way of 'Greening' traditional power stations and still making the electricity produced by them cheaper than that produced by wind power stations.

The Christmas 60's Disco fund raising event held on 21st December was a great success. Everyone had a thoroughly good evening with some people entering into the spirit of the occasion by dressing in 60's fashions.

For those who had the misfortune to miss this event, we have organised another fundraising event on Tuesday 8th February at Scissett WMC. This time we will be entertained by Folk entertainer Shep Woolley.

Supported by Barnsley's own singer/songwriter Dave Cherry.

TONY BLAIR ACCUSED OF NIMBYISM.

The Prime Minister is reported in the Daily Mail on Friday 17/12/2004 as being opposed to a wind farm site just 1 mile away from his home in Trimdon Colliery, County Durham. It seems that he has the same concerns about the windfarm being sited too close to homes, just as we have about the proposed Pool Hill site.

Alec Shelbrooke (Parliamentary candidate for the Conservative Party) arranged Mr Howard’s visit on November 26th.

We were pleased and surprised to receive a personal reply to our ‘thank you’ letter.

We have since been visited by Mr David Hinchliffe MP and Mary Creagh (Parliamentary candidate for the Labour Party)

Mary Creagh had made an earlier visit during the summer so was already aware of our anxieties concerning the proposed turbine site at Pool Hill but Mr Hinchliffe had not seen the testing mast from Kitchenroyd’s perspective below the ridge. Both were very supportive and discussed the impact that turbines on the proposed site could have upon the community.

RAW is made up of people of all backgrounds and political persuasions, united in their opposition to the proposed site. We have been gratified by the support and encouragement offered by councillors and politicians of all parties at local and national level. Let us hope that when the time comes, a large proportion of the local population will make formal objections to any planning application and that common sense will prevail.

Visit to Denby Dale by Mr Michael Howard M.P.  on 25.11.2004

Members of R.A.W. were pleased to have the opportunity to discuss the proposed turbine site at Denby Dale with Mr Howard. He is aware of the extent of local opposition to the scheme and was most supportive.

Mr Howard said: "We are not against Wind Farms in principle, but local people should have a real say in where they are sited.

After today I will be keeping in touch with the local Tory candidate to see what happens here. I know local people will want to make their voices heard but that ability has been diminished by the Government’s latest planning law."

Mr Howard looked at the proposed site and at the surrounding countryside and settlements. He obviously was very knowledgeable about the impact that large turbines can have and discussed the present Government’s attitude in making wind energy its main focus instead of putting more emphasis upon other ‘green’ sources including wave energy that does not suffer intermittency problems.

There is a proposal for a large wind farm in Mr Howard’s own constituency in Kent and he has spoken out in the press on several occasions recently about the industrialisation of the countryside.

We are most grateful to Mr Alec Shelbrooke (Parliamentary Candidate for the Conservative Party) and to our local Kirklees councillors for arranging Mr Howard’s visit.

 THE 60m MONITORING MAST DISMANTLED

at 11.30am on Tuesday 23rd November 2004

After standing for over 6 months the wind monitoring mast was taken down this morning. This might be the precursor to formal application for planning permission for the wind farm at Pool Hill Denby Dale. We must now be ready in case a planning application goes in between now and the New Year.

The core group meeting on Tuesday 16th November was attended by Mr B Moss of Century Steels Ltd, Penistone.

Mr Moss talked to the group about the 42m, 200kW, Vesta wind turbine that he installed at his premises at Mill House Green, Penistone in 1987. Mr Moss emphasised to the group that he was in favour of wind energy. The consensus of the group was that sited in the right place wind turbines have a contribution to make as a renewable energy resource. Mr Moss stated that in his judgement the wind turbines proposed to be constructed at Pool Hill are sited in the wrong place.

The core members would like to thank Mr Moss for giving up his time to share his experience of wind turbines with the group.

The public meeting called by Denby Dale Parish Council on the 27th September was very successful. Approximately 200 people packed into St Augustine's Church Scissett. A presentation by Mr. Patrick Auterson of Kirklees planning on planning policy started the evening and a lively debate followed. The council had called the meeting to gauge the opinion of local people towards the installation of wind turbines at Pool Hill. The mood of the meeting was perceived to be against the windfarm.

We would like to thank the Parish Council for organising the meeting and also all those people who turned out to show their opposition to this scheme.

Delegates from RAW attended the first national Wind Farm Protest Group  conference at Saddleworth on Saturday June 19th.

Over 200 people attended the conference addressed by David Bellamy, Sir Bernard Ingham and internationally respected scientists such as Dr Richard Courtney.

Opening the conference, Dr David Bellamy condemned the "Lies, dammed lies and Wind Farms" which tried to pass off Wind Turbines as Green Energy. Dr Bellamy said it was wrong to call them wind farms. They were wind factories causing High rise industrialisation of the landscape.

Sir Bernard Ingham a former official at the department of Energy responsible for energy conservation policy and renewable sources of energy, said that the traditional objective of British Energy policy "was to ensure security of supply at affordable cost".

He said that the current government's Energy policy was "irresponsible and a threat to the lifestyles livelihoods and jobs of every citizen. In the short, medium and longer term we face risk of power cuts leading to immense economic damage".
